What it makes

A two-part winder. The body has a solid floor and a ribbed centre post. The spool (hub) prints separately and pushes down onto the post, where spring arms click between the ribs as you wind.

The lid clicks on like a pill box but still turns. Pins under it drop into the spool, so lid and spool turn together as one winding handle, with nothing sticking out on top.

Choosing a size

There are 9 standard sizes: 55, 65 or 75mm across, and 25, 30 or 35mm tall. Each diameter has its own hub, 35, 40 or 45mm.

Pick your cable type and each size shows how much of that cable it holds. A size is greyed out when the cable is too thick to bend round that hub. As a guide, 1.5m of standard USB fits 55 × 25mm.

Printing it

  • No supports. Body floor-down, hub base-down, lid top-down.
  • The print plate STL has all three parts. The single parts are there to reprint one.
  • Assembly: push the hub straight down onto the post until it clicks.
  • Lid: set it on, turn it until the pins drop into their holes, then push down until it clicks.

Questions

Which way does it wind?

Clockwise seen from the top by default, and arrows on the hub show it. The cable leaves the hub heading the way it winds, so there's no sharp corner. You can switch it under Advanced.

Will a thick HDMI cable fit?

Slim HDMI, about 5mm, fits the 75mm sizes. The smaller hubs would bend it too tightly, so those sizes are greyed out.
